The only difference between USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.1 Gen 2 lies in the data transfer speed. USB 3.1 Gen 1 supports speeds of up to 5 Gbps, while USB 3.1 Gen 2 can reach speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
USB-IF considered using different names to refer to these USB standards, which could would be more effective from a marketing point of view. They considered using the names "SuperSpeed USB" and "SuperSpeed USB+", respectively, for USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2, but these names were not adopted by the industry.
To differentiate the two USB standards, OEMs often add 5Gbps speeds. s or 10 Gbit/s in their specification tables. At the same time, others simply call them "USB 3.1 Gen 1" or "USB 3.1 Gen 2".
